Smetana String Quartet No. 2 in D minor
Bartók String Quartet No. 2, Op. 17
Beethoven String Quartet F major, op.18, no.1
Some of the most powerful string quartets say as much between the notes as within them. This program brings together three works where personal confession, folk memory, and historical upheaval quietly shape the music from behind the scenes.

Beethoven’s
String Quartet in F major, Op. 18, No. 1 finds a young composer testing the boundaries of a genre he would soon transform — confidence and experimentation woven into a classical frame. Smetana’s String Quartet No. 2 in D minor, written as his hearing failed him, reads like a private diary of fear and resilience. And Bartók’s String Quartet No. 2, composed against the backdrop of the First World War, channels folk idiom and wartime unease into music of raw, searching intensity.
